In the position, scientific work will be performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) within the Institute of Catalysis Research and Technology (IKFT) and the Karlsruhe Liquid Metal Laboratory (KALLA).

Your contract will be with BASF SE as the employer. Your place of work will be the Karlsruhe Liquid Metal Laboratory (KALLA) at Campus North of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

What you can expect

BASF SE offers a temporary PhD position that aims at developing a gas-phase process for the endothermal dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde.
Your scientific work will comprise conceptual work on possible reaction mechanisms [1], the design, construction and modification of a gas-phase test set-up, experiments [2] applying a variety of metal vapors as chemical initiators for the target reactions as well as the characterization of reaction kinetics in the field of operating parameters.

  • You will collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment with scientific staff from academia and industry.
  • Scientific coaching will be provided by the staff at the Institute of Catalysis Research and Technology (IKFT) and the Karlsruhe Liquid Metal Laboratory (KALLA) at KIT. In addition, you will collaborate with scientists at BASF in Ludwigshafen.
  • Apart from scientific work, the position will allow you to develop extracurricular skills and to build a support network with other PhD students as well as with scientists from the industry.
  • Furthermore, you will promote your research and represent the group at international conferences.
What we expect

  • You have successfully completed your master's degree or diploma in Chemistry, Physics or Chemical Engineering.
  • Additionally, you have first experience in gas-phase radical reaction kinetics, physical chemistry.
  • Ideally you should have programming knowledge e.g. Python, Mathlab, Aspen Plus or Presto.
  • A driving license and willingness to travel are desirable.
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English and has got basic knowledge of German.
