The candidate will be responsible for the design and development of a data science ecosystem as well as for enhancements, maintenance, and support of already existing systems.
The tasks that form part of the candidates’ job profile include:
- Design and implement data-driven software solutions along the entire software development life cycle, including requirements engineering, software design, implementation, testing, integration and maintenance
- Deliver robust, tested and performant code
- Liaise with experts in medicine, biology to ensure fit-for-purpose programming interfaces and data pipelines for data-driven software projects
- Support and maintain existing enterprise scale web services using, amongst others, Java and Python Handle most frequently used APIs and understand concepts of SOA/microservices as well as data modelling and database development
- Perform deployments, migrate data, setup environments, and provide technical support where necessary, and demonstrate attention to detail and follow-through
- Understanding security, privacy-enhancing technologies, compliance requirements, distributed analytics, and previous experience with implementing and maintaining proper controls will be of benefit
The candidate will have to demonstrate problem solving skills to be able to troubleshoot/trace SOA issues by working with development and cross functional teams of other Institutes and research groups, the Medical Data Integration Center (MeDIC) of the University Hospital of Cologne as well as external stakeholders, including industry.
Strong analytical skills and ability to make informed decisions and ability to work independently are a requirement.

- Demonstrated advanced programming expertise in Object-oriented programming (preferably Java and Python) and in developing and delivering robust end-to-end software solutions
- Knowledge of modern software development tools and practices including DevOps, continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD), containerization, and shell scripting
- The candidate should be familiar with the effective combination of software solutions supported by modular, scalable and extensible service-based architectures
- The candidate should ideally also be able to design, develop, and maintain custom developed data sharing services including the development of custom scripts, utilities, and integrations using a variety of software tools to fulfil needs as identified and also be able to exhibit proficiency with REST services, microservices, API Development, Java/ J2EE and Java development IDEs (e.g. IntelliJ, Eclipse)
- Expertise should be evidenced through achievements (e.g. GitHub and / or GitLab publications, other projects where the applicant may demonstrate evidence of the role they had, etc.) and at least 2+ years of experience with application or script development
